New brief on latest agroecology policy developments in Africa

Agroecology offers multiple benefits for a transition to sustainable agri-food systems. But how can we bring agroecology to scale at country-level? National Agroecology Strategies, have the potential to harness opportunities of upscaling agroecological production practices, developing markets, value chains and consumer demand that can accelerate transition.

There is real momentum in Eastern and Southern Africa to develop such strategies to support the agroecological transition of food systems. In this context, Biovision launched the brief «National Agroecology Strategies in Eastern and Southern Africa: Lighthouses for food system transformation» in March during a joint event with FAO and the Agroeoclogy Coalition.

The brief notably discusses the following elements:
- Insights on NAS processes in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
- 5 reasons why governments should opt for a NAS.
- A «4x4 framework of strategic objectives» these strategies contain accompanied by concrete examples      of policy interventions these strategies contain.
- Methodological tips on how to shape policy interventions to maximize impact and support implementation through prioritization.
- Insights on resource mobilization for these strategies.

This brief builds on a peer-to-peer exchange organized last October with government and civil society representatives from 8 countries from Eastern and Southern Africa working on these strategies or related agroecological policies. We hope you will enjoy the read!
