The Swiss NGO Alliance Sufosec – Fastenaktion, SWISSAID, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse, Vivamos Mejor, Aqua Alimenta, Skat Foundation – published a fact sheet on the progress of its joint programme in the context of the global food crisis. The fact sheet reveals the latest results of an on-going annual household survey among 10’000 smallholder households on agroecology and food security. The data shows that the dissemination of agroecological practices led to noticeable food security improvements: between 2021 and 2023, food insecurity at 30 sites in 19 countries decreased by 15 percent despite adverse circumstances such as the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, extreme climatic events, and growing political conflicts in several programme countries. An in-depth statistical analysis of the data by the Centre for Development and Environment of the University of Bern also shows that the longer agroecological measures are applied, the more clearly progress is visible, and that each additional agroecological method applied statistically reduces food insecurity by a further 5 percent.
The Sufosec fact sheet is a summary of a more detailed Sufosec report on global food and nutrition that will be published in October.
