Series: Livestock

During 2024, the SDC Agriculture and Food Systems Network plans to hold a series of webinars on livestock topics. The slides of past webinars and information on future webinars can be found below.

Livestock farming is at the heart of many of the programmes supported by Switzerland in the Sahel region and in the Horn of Africa. It is the main source of income for millions of people and plays a central role in the economy of many countries. Yet, pastoral communities represent the poorest share of the population – and often the most vulnerable. The regions where they live are ecologically fragile and subject to recurrent shocks that are exacerbated by climate change and conflicts.

In this view, it is proposed to organize regular online exchanges addressing specific issues associated with livestock farming, such as insurance, integration of agroecology and links with climate change, women economic empowerment, and digitalization. Other topics, such as cross-border trade, conflicts between farmers and pastoralists, and nutrition in pastoral communities, could also be included in the discussions. The aim is to encourage experience and knowledge sharing between SDC colleagues and partners. The discussions will be organized with the support of the Agriculture and Food Systems Network, and simultaneous translation between ENG-FR will be provided.
