Seeds are the foundation of food systems, determining crop productivity, resilience, and nutritional quality. Yet farmers - especially smallholders - face persistent challenges in accessing diverse, high-quality and locally adapted seeds, as well as maintaining seed sovereignty amid climate change, market concentration, and weak support for farmer-managed seed systems.
As spring sets in, seeds literally and figuratively become the starting point of this Thoughts for Food session:
The path towards an African policy for Farmer-Managed Seed Systems
Farmer-Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) are critical for smallholder resilience but face policy and coordination challenges across Africa. Famara Diédhiou, Programme Coordinator West Africa at AFSA, will share how AFSA engages with the African Union and its key steps and strategy to bring about change, using evidence-based proposals and dialogue to advance practical policy solutions.
Lessons from efforts to build an HDP-Nexus for Africa's seed sectors
The ISSD Africa Community of Practice has spent two and a half years exploring HDP-Nexus thinking and action for Africa’s seed sector, uncovering innovations and options while navigating persistent institutional barriers. Abishkar Subedi, Senior Advisor at Wageningen Social and Economic Research, and James Mulkerrins, ISSD Africa Coordinator, will highlight key insights and discuss what is truly necessary to achieve effective systemic change
